Lena Our family took a train to Jurmala and it was very cheap and it takes while to get there. Hey people, lets have some open mind to go trip as common people use. If you want to have luxury, don´t even think about, just be in your 5star hotel...
Paul The biggest problem with the Latvian railroad -- no money!!! In recent years, much of international service has been cut down (in fact, you CAN'T get from Riga to Berlin or Warsaw by train these days). Even domestic service is experiencing trouble... They're trying to modernize some older trains, but there are no funds to buy new trains. The only international routes that are profitable are Moscow and St.Petersburg. I think a self-respecting European nation MUST have a well-developed railroad infrastructure. It's a matter of prestige for the country. At the very least, Tallinn and Vilnius should be connected to Riga by train!
Cyril Absolutely agree with Jean-Claude. You have to take a ride as long as they last. It's an experience you will not get elswhere and thus never forget. My advice: Unless you wanna get a free sauna in the train, don't take the train in full summer time. For all you romantics out there - why don't you try it in winter time? I took the train once from Riga eastbounds a couple of kilometers, between Christmas and New Year's Eve, through snowed-in forests and lovely, lonely villages and houses: Marvellous, marvellous, marvellous! In none of the grimm brother's fairy tails collection have I ever read something as nice as this! Yours, Cyril from Switzerland.
Jean-Claude Took the train from Riga to Jurmala this summer. First surprise, the ticket was dead cheap, a shade over 1 LVL for the round trip. The train was a big Soviet time monster, not very pratical to get in and out (steep stairs) but what an experience... sounded like a MIG jetfighter when starting. The train attendant was a very helpful and nice person. My advice: take a ride as long as they last.
