www.kim.lvWhat is art / what is museum? — these are two questions, answers to which are most often sought nowhere else, but in museum. Museum seems to be a place that hosts the truth about what is art. However, it usually is the truth of yesterday. It is the old truth, because the answer to question “what is museum?” Alters as swiftly and unexpectedly as the answer to question “what is art?”. According to the western wisdom known ever since the antique times, one cannot and must not rely on answers. They are ever inconsistent and coupled with time. However, the significance is borne by the question itself. It will exist, as long as art and thinking will. In consequence, we don’t want the museum to be a repository of ready answers, namely, a place to come to and to find out. Instead, we want it to be a place where to go to in order to think and to question every answer obtained, thus step by step getting closer to the ideal, namely, the truth.
What does being a contemporary art museum mean? It is easier to answer this question by means of exclusion. Contemporary art museum is not a building where objects called art are stored. It is not a place to go to in order to acquire ready truth. It is not an archive or storage of the valuables. Latvian contemporary art museum kim? is a space for feeling and thinking, an unending process of exploring the one's self and the world through other unknown and extraordinary worlds — the art works.
Owing to efforts and initiative of artists and curators, questions about what is art and answers thereto arise. kim? has been established in order to increase the number of these questions and answers, make them more sensible and dynamic, promote the intellectual and emotional development of society — the latter meaning people who come to the museum — or, to put it differently, promote becoming wiser and better.
