Street Tango Avantgarde

Fernández Fierro is the first and most popular orchestra of the so-called New Tango movement that revolutionised the world’s Tango scene and inspired a whole new generation of musicians. Though they perform with a typical tango orchestra formation (four bandoneons, four violins, a viola, a violoncello, a double-bass, a piano and a singer) and an “original” attitude based on a powerful manner of feeling and performing tango, they have brought conventional tango to a new level.

Due to their somewhat peculiar arrangements and solid compositions, their easiness, their colorful outfits and their power on stage, ‘La Fierro’ have not only radically renewed the stiff tango scene of Buenos Aires, shaking its traditional foundations and avoiding its commonplaces, but also proved successful abroad during several sold out tours all over the world.

The ensemble Orquesta Típica Fernandez Fierro was founded in 2001 and ever since has been shaking up the tango scene dramatically. With their violent sound and their energetic performance they play tango as it was and as it should be: not brushed up and polished to fine arts, but raw, dirty and passionate. The most Rock’n’Roll in Tango, the most Tango in Rock’n’Roll. Also their way of working is totally DIY: all decisions are made collective, their albums are self-produced and as a cooperative they run their own venue in Buenos Aires. Including their current album “En vivo”, the first release with the impressive Julieta Laso on vocals, Orquesta Típica Fernandez Fierro released seven CDs and one DVD. Rolling Stone in Argentina included their song “Las Luces del Estadio/Buenos Aires Hora Cero” in its list of the 100 best songs, and awarded their album „Fernandez Fierro“ as one of the Top 5 albums of the Year 2009.

Orquesta Típica Fernandez Fierro and their very own interpretation of tango have conquered the hearts of countless fans all over the world. Long ago they have overcome the strict barriers of the tango scene, and keep poaching in the grounds of Rock and Mainstream. From Joe’s Pub in New York to The Barbican in London, from the Festival d’Ile de France to WOMEX, from Roskilde Festival to Sydney Festival: the audience gives in without resistance to their charme, their passion and their madness.
