Latvian
1212 An upscale Latvian taverna, spread over three fl oors of a
narrow Old Riga building, that offers inventive European
and nouvelle Latvian a la carte cuisine. All wooden and
brick elements are original, the restaurant is divided into
many separate spaces and has a marvelous roof terrace,
making it a perfect shelter for small companies, business
or romantic meetings.
Alus Arsenals Traditional Latvian “krogs” (taverna), standing proud
since 1997, located in a historical Old Riga building,
good place to dive into rather simple, but happy Latvian
gastronomy traditions—one of local favourites. Homemade
meter sausages, pork legs, pork ribs and local
beer on draught. We recommend rustic Uzavas, Piebalga,
Rîgas and yes, try two kinds of special non-filtered
Alus Arsenals beer. Prieka!
Alus Ordenis (The Beer Order) A medieval style beer cellar under the Black Cat Embassy,
which serves a wide choice of beer, beer snacks and traditional
Latvian food—’pig beans’, bloody sausage, sour
porridge and many more. Wait staff is dressed in medieval
clothes, fitting in perfectly with the rustic yet light decor.
Alus Seta (Lido Group) Located just off the Dome square, this joint is pretty rowdy and bubbling over with Latvian youth. Self-service, heavy Latvian style food. A variety of local beer on tap.
Cau, Rasma!
Cellar Latvian pub style restaurant reminding of good old times. Home style typical Latvian cooking, extremely good value for money if you like substantial dishes of big size. Tastes very good as well! Latvian bands play live on some evenings. Also organise karaoke.
Charlestons This experienced Canadian-Latvian owned restaurant is
also a TV studio (Garšu Laboratorija show) for its chef
Elmars Tannis, one of the not-so-many nationwide known
TV stars, who serves presidents and diplomats. Rather
easy comfy-homey atmosphere is hiding chef-d’oeuvre
of trusted nouvelle Latvian + European cuisine. Game
meals, mostly eco produce, and a trustworthy specialist
wine list will defi nitely please you. Try it out and then fi nd
out the chef’s secrets at his cooking school.
Draugu Darbnica Eating at the family owned and operated Draugu Darbnîca
is the same as to drop by for dinner at your skilful
Latvian grandma. Hearty and unpretentious, basic Latvian
home food and interior, cheerful and loving service,
home baked bread, pies and bulciñas by family recipes
since 1936, herbal teas and giveaway prices.
Dzirnavas (Lido Group) This country-style cafeteria has been fondly dubbed by some the "Latvian McDonalds", as the food simmers mouth-wateringly before your eyes and customers are often at a loss as to what to choose. No one leaves the Windmill hungry. Gluttons, plunder the salad buffet; reproducing Mount Everest on your plate takes training and skill, but we've seen some pretty good imitations. Don't miss out on the delicious shashliks!
Express restaurant (LIDO)
The second floor of the LIDO Recreation Centre (see
below) houses a great place for business lunch, family
events and other parties. Offers a variety of 100 cold
delicatessen, exquisite hot courses, LIDO cakes and
desserts.
Folk Club Ala This Latvian/Australian owned and operated taverna offers
an insight into Latvian culture. Enjoy traditional seasonal
meals such as grey peas, pork leg, bread soup,
as well as 16 local beer kinds on draught in Latvian
country-side interior. In the evenings traditional music
and dances.
Lido Atputas Centrs (Lido Recreation Centre) One of the most favourite places of family recreation in
Latvia. The building is on of the largest and most beautiful
log cabins in Europe and can host more than 1000
visitors. It is characterized by a Latvian environment, tasty
and various dishes, LIDO beer, live music every evening,
celebration of national festivities with gorgeous decorations
and concerts. Take tram Nº 3, 7 or 9, or bus Nº 12.
Livonija Restaurant Livonija, located in the very centre of Old
Riga, at the edge of the bustling Livu Square, returns
you to the Middle Ages in Latvia, or Livonija, as the region
was known from the 11th to the 18th century. Upon
passing down the stairs, you enter in a forgotten world
of strolling minstrels, fair maidens and knights in shining
armour. The menu specializes in local and traditional
Latvian foods.
Piejura Trusted place to go for Latvian cuisine. Latvian cheeses,
good selection of Latvian beers on tap, grey peas, and,
of course, potato pancakes with salmon. Perfect Town
Hall Square view.
Salve When you try one of Salve’s dishes, you won’t believe that
simple, rustic Latvian produce could possibly be combined in such an elegant and gastronomic way. Defi nitely
the place to get a taste of Latvia at its most refined—the
carefully done interior and prime location will complete
the right mood; don’t be afraid, it’s not that expensive.
Vermanitis (Lido Group) Decorated in light-hearted, ethnic Latvian style, this self-service eatery (named after the park it faces) offers a good, filling Latvian food, which you may enjoy, accompanied by traditional Latvian music. A great place to fill your 'tum' with several pounds of local grub at a low price, if you don't mind the ever-present chatter of other patrons situated close by. A few international dishes are also available.
Zila Govs (The Blue Cow) A blue cow is a mythical Latvian cow breed. The elegant
taverna-style restaurant which is named after it, specializes
in creative Latvian cuisine. Serves biological Latvian
products and of course meat, aged 25-40 days in a
special room—the restaurant’s pride. It is a nice option
to try out local food in a sophisticated yet traditional
manner.
